Unveiling Ceremony in Mexico City
On April 19, 2010, a ceremony honoring Costas Montis took place at the beautiful campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City. The ceremony was organized jointly by the Embassy of Cyprus to Mexico and UNAM, and was sponsored and funded by the Photos Photiades Foundation.
Well-known Mexican sculptor Bernardo Piña was commissioned by the Photos Photiades Foundation to sculpt a bust of poet Costas Montis.The magnificent bronze bust has been very appropriately placed right in front of the central library in the main square of the university.
The unveiling was done by the Ambassador of Cyprus to Mexico Mr. Vasilis Philippou and the Chair of the Dept. of Greek Studies Prof. Gloria Villegas in the presence of university officials, professors, students, and many more. In a ceremony that followed, speeches on Costas Montis' life and work were given, among others, by Prof. Gloria Villegas, Prof. Natalia Moreleón, the Ambassador of Cyprus to Mexico Mr. Vasilis Philippou, the Consul of Cyprus to Mexico Mr. Eleftherios Pilavakis, who spoke on behalf of Mr. Pavlos Photiades,and the daughter of Costas Montis, Stalo Monti-Pouagare. Finally, Mexican students of Greek Studies stole the show with their touching recitations in Greek of poems by Costas Montis.
UNAM was founded in 1910,and is one of the most recognized universities in Latin America. UNAM boasts many Nobel Prize laureates among its alumni. In terms of student population, it is the largest university in the whole American continent with over 305 thousand students in a single campus.
